New trend in eco-fashion: salmon skin

Something that's caught our Pretty eye is bag and accessories company One October. Sure, their designs are both edgy while timeless (like their Joanna clutch above), but they're also eco-savvy. While most exotic leathers are obtained from the skins of endangered species, LA-based One October opts for using salmon skin.

"Whuh?" this salmon is surely thinking.

Salmon skin is only an industrial residue from the farmed salmon industry, yet it is considered "exotic" leather. So by using salmon skin, One October aims to give us high fashion in an environmentally sustainable way.

And the EU agrees:
In many ways, salmon skins are highly suitable for tanning – they are relatively large and thick and are very flexible, and, most importantly, are inexpensive. Coupled to this, the salmon industry is very stable, so fish factories can offer a regular supply of skins.

We love how One October is helping us still stay trendy and hip without wasting precious environmental materials. Their Valentine collection includes the same clutch from above in pink and this pretty pink number called Barbara below:

Available online or at Satine; 8117 W 3rd Street, Los Angeles.
