Sulfates: you totally suck (the color out of my hair)

So I've been using some nice shampoos recently and I've been noticing that they don't really work into a lather. Why is this? At first I thought maybe they weren't working as well as what I'm used to, but after some research I've found out that it's because these shampoos are missing a harmful ingredient called sulfate.

Sulfates are harsh cleansing agents that tends to strip hair color and make color fade faster. Lots of hair products use them because they create lots of lather and sulfates are cheap to manufacture. Plus, people (like me) expect lather in their shampoos. Sulfates are also found in toothpaste and even at the car wash. They're known to cause eye and skin irritation, plus as I mentioned before, they can damage your hair. They strip your hair and scalp of essential oils, ruin your expensive color-job by making it fade, not to mention also damage hair follicles which can lead to hair loss. Ech.

So keep an eye out for Sulfate-free shampoos like Ole Henrickson, Burt's Bees or Fat Hair Thickening Shampoo. Lovely hair blogger Killer Strands also has a huge list.
